Music 25/3/8

The Decemberists first album Castaways and Cutouts. Really enjoying this fine well written and performed pop music album. Very Americana – that is to say a folksy/roots with bits of jazz and country without being “Anytown USA Folkfest” overbearing and pretentious. Good tunes for the fan of American Music.

Calla latest Strength in Numbers. Another fine pop record. Very much not Americana. New York based band plays songs from the night, but a New York night. Alive, shifting in the open and seething in the shadows. Come back to this stuff by the light of day and it is completely different. Which is a strength of this record, this contains some of the most cohesive songs yet by this band. This allows them to move much of the electronica to the background, like that train two blocks down the street or the neighbors having an argument across the hall, its there and somehow things wouldn’t be right without them but hey, you’ve got things to do so just get on with it, right. This still retains their signature slowness, almost downtrodden at times but there are slivers of light coming through and it is a good thing. Not for everyone but rewards the efforts of the adventurer.
